10. I continue self-examination and promptly admit when I make mistakes.
As an introduction to the step work: Â
- Review Step 10 in our 12/12 book! Â
- Attend meetings where Step 10 is discussed! Â
- Talk to your sponsor about Step 10! Â
10.1 I notice when I don’t feel well. Â
Think back over the last few hours and try to recall: Â
- Was there a moment when you felt good? Â
- What emotions did you have at that time? Joy? Happiness? Peace? Â
- What thoughts were in your mind during this? Â
- Was there a moment when you felt bad? Â
- What emotions did you have at that time? Anger? Fear? Sorrow? Â
- What thoughts were in your mind during this? Â
- Did you have any strong physical symptoms while feeling bad? Â
10.2 I recognize that if something bothers me, I need to look for the fault within myself. Â
Write down (reflect on): Â
- Is there such a thing as justified anger? Â
- Is there a legitimate grievance? Â
- Can suffering lead you back to drinking? Â
- What most often causes you suffering? Desires? Emotions? Thoughts? Â
Write down any experience that supports the idea that: Â
- If something bothers you, there’s a problem with you. Â
- You need to find the fault within yourself. Â
10.3 I know that my excessive desires can cause a lot of suffering. Â
Write down (reflect on) whether you yearn for the following: Â
- Material goods (food, clothes, car, money) Â
- Security (housing, job, savings) Â
- Relationships (friends, sex, love, recognition) Â
- Activities, experiences (entertainment, sports, travel) Â
- Self-actualization (knowledge, skills, fame) Â
If a strong desire arises within you for something, practice the following (or something similar): Â
- This isn’t really important right now! Â
- I don’t necessarily need this! Â
- It’s good here now! Â
10.4 I no longer dwell on the past. Â
Write down (reflect on): Â
- Do you ever find yourself ruminating about the past? Â
- Do you feel bad when you think about the past? Â
- Would you still like to change the past sometimes? Â
- Would you like to correct some of your mistakes? Â
- Do you still harbor resentment towards anyone? Â
- Do you regularly practice amends? Â
If a painful thought brings up a past mistake, practice the following (or something similar): Â
- It seemed like a good idea at the time… Â
10.5 I am not afraid of the future. Â
Write down (reflect on): Â
- Will the future be as we envision it? Â
- Does the future follow from the past? Â
- Do we have to carry through with our visions of the future? Â
- Can forgiveness free us from fear? Â
- Is it worth sharing our problems with others? Â
- Can we recognize our ego-driven needs? Â
- Is it possible to let go of our ego desires? Â
- Can direct amends dissolve bad karma? Â
Write down any experience that supports the idea that: Â
- Love and fear exclude each other. Â
Practice the following (or something similar): Â
- I love God! Â
- I love the world created by God! Â
- I love people! Â
- I love the present moment! Â
10.6 I can recognize the negative emotions behind bad feelings. Â
When you feel bad, try to identify which emotions are behind it. What is your experience? Â
- Do you often feel shame, humiliation? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel guilt, self-pity? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel apathy, despair? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel sorrow, sadness? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel fear, anxiety? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel longing, yearning? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel anger, hatred, vengeance? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel loneliness, isolation? Rarely? Often? Â
- Do you often feel contempt, pride? Rarely? Often? Â
10.7 I can identify the thought cycles surrounding negative emotions. Â
Try to articulate what thoughts swirl in your mind when you experience the following emotions: Â
- Shame, humiliation Â
- Guilt, self-pity Â
- Apathy, despair Â
- Sorrow, sadness Â
- Fear, anxiety Â
- Longing, yearning Â
- Anger, hatred, vengeance Â
- Loneliness, isolation Â
- Contempt, pride Â
10.8 I see that these thoughts are related to bad feelings. Â
Write down (reflect on): Â
- Can negative thoughts trigger bad feelings? Â
- Can negative emotions cause bad feelings? Â
- Can bad thoughts lead to a bad emotional state? Â
- Can a bad emotional state disrupt our thinking? Â
- Does our mindset affect our thoughts and emotions? Â
- Can the software of our minds be rewritten? Â
Write down any experience that supports the idea that: Â
- Bad programs can be overwritten. Â
- Our mindset can be changed. Â
10.9 I am willing to change these thoughts. Â
Write down (reflect on) whether the thoughts swirling in your mind: Â
- Are they always conscious and intentional? Â
- Are you the "author" of them? Do they always characterize you? Â
- Can they be incorrect? Â
- Do they always generate the same emotions? Â
- Can they be changed? How? Â
10.10 I can let go of the ego mindset. Â
Write down (reflect on) whether you can already let go of: Â
- Negative emotions? Â
- Labeling, judgment? Â
- Dramatizing? Â
- Expectations of others? Â
- Demands from the world? Â
Do you still consider important: Â
- Your own opinion? Â
- Your own truth? Â
- The attention of your environment? Â
- The love of your acquaintances? Â
- Your own success? Â
- Your own victory? Â
- Your own happiness? Â
- Your own will? Â
Do you still identify with: Â
- Your life story? Â
- Your upbringing? Â
- Your education? Â
- Your knowledge? Â
- Your abilities? Â
- Your work? Â
- Your relationships? Â
- Your appearance? Â
- Your nationality? Â
- Your illnesses? Â
- Your achievements? Â
- Your possessions? Â
- Your physical body? Â
- Your belief system? Â
- Your political views? Â
- Your social status? Â
- Your memories? Â
- Your emotions? Â
- Your opinion? Â
- Your thoughts? Â
10.11 I can replace negative attitudes and approaches with positive ones. Â
Take out the attitude inventory you made in Step 4.11 and practice those that you feel are necessary (something like this, with your own examples): Â
- I am peaceful, not aggressive! Â
- I am a fighter, not competitive! Â
- I am responsible, not guilty! Â
- I am trusting, not dependent! Â
10.12 I am willing to develop new, positive attitudes through practice. Â
Read any chosen – but high-level – spiritual literature, such as: Â
- Bhagavad Gita Â
- The Sayings of Buddha Â
- New Testament Â
- Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now) Â
- David R. Hawkins (The Eye of the Universe) Â
- BĂ©la Balogh (The Ten Commandments of the Subconscious) Â
- A Course in Miracles Â
Write down intelligent thoughts, slogans, mantras from these that you can then practice to develop new perspectives! Â

SHORT EXPLANATIONSÂ
*For the check questions of Step 10* Â
- Many people, when feeling bad, think the world is bad. They don’t realize that the bad feeling is within them. Â
- A fundamental spiritual principle is that whenever something bothers us, there is a problem with us. Â
- One of the main sources of suffering is yearning as an ego habit. Buddha articulated this 2500 years ago. Â
- The past is past. What has happened cannot be changed. Therefore, such intentions cause suffering. Â
- The desire to control the future – as an ego aspiration – causes suffering. Â
- Feelings are either good or bad. They are caused by positive or negative emotions. Â
- Emotions and thoughts go hand in hand; they arise from each other. Â
- Incorrect thoughts can create negative emotions, which generate bad feelings within us. Â
- We cannot change emotions; we can only change thoughts. Â
- Incorrect thoughts are created by an ego-centered mindset. Â
- Only through practice can we change our mindset. Â
- New perspectives correct the old and lead to healing. Â
