Nature and focus of the therapy programme
The day-care centre is primarily a service for people living in their own homes to ensure a daily rhythm of life appropriate to their social, health and mental state. It provides the opportunity for daytime activities, social contact and basic hygiene needs. The effects of psychiatric illness and addiction are felt not only by the individual living with the illness but also by their family members and their immediate and extended environment, and day care therefore provides a form of care that is accessible to the client's environment. An important element of day care is the preventive effect of the service, since longer-term social and mental care based on individual needs, assistance in living and managing life, personality development and the strength of the community can prevent the person with the problem from becoming increasingly isolated and deteriorating.
