9. I have made direct amends to all those I could, except when to do so would injure them or others.
As an introduction to the step work:
Study the 9th step in our 12/12 book!
Attend meetings that focus on the 9th step!
Talk with your sponsor about the 9th step!
9.1, I try to reach out to them for the purpose of making amends.
Refer to the list you created in the previous step. Try to arrange meetings with those at the top of your list for the purpose of making amends:
In person
By phone
Via Messenger
By email
Through a mutual acquaintance
9.2, I make full amends to some.
After you manage to meet with them:
Acknowledge to them what mistakes you have made:
In thought
In word
In action
By omission
Acknowledge to them the nature and extent of the harm you have caused them:
Material
Physical
Spiritual
Emotional
Discuss with them how you will make amends!
9.3, I make partial amends to some.
If full and immediate amends are not possible, then discuss further forms of amends with them:
Repayment
Support, sponsorship
Togetherness
Emotional assistance, etc.
9.4, I have ongoing amends with some.
Who are the ones with whom your amends are ongoing? Is this:
Personalized?
General?
9.5, I know who I will make amends to later.
Write down (think about) if there are any people on your list:
With whom you are currently not in contact
Whose whereabouts you do not know or what they are doing
Who likely would not be interested in your amends actions
9.6, I address those where personal contact is not possible.
Think about whether there are any people on your list who:
Live too far away
Are no longer living
In the first case, try to use indirect channels:
Phone
Email
Chat (Messenger)
In the second case, simply imagine that:
You meet with them again,
You acknowledge your mistakes to them,
And you turn to them with love.
9.7, I do not try to substitute direct amends with an apology.
Always keep in mind that an apology cannot replace direct amends!
